John Lennon was a closet Republican and fan of Ronald Reagan at the time of his death, the singer's former personal assistant is claiming.
Imagine there's no taxes.
Anti-war music legend John Lennon was a closet Republican at the time of his death, one of his former personal assistants now claims.
Fred Seaman, who aided the British musician from 1979made it very clear that if he were an American he would vote for Reagan because he was really sour on Jimmy Carter," Seaman reveals in the new documentary "Beatles Stories," according to the
Toronto Sun
.
"He'd met Reagan back, I think, in the '70s at some sporting event. ... Reagan was the guy who had ordered the National Guard, I believe, to go after the young [peace] demonstrators in Berkeley, so I think that John maybe forgot about that. ... He did express support for Reagan, which shocked me," he told "Beatles Stories" filmmaker Seth Swirsky.
until the singer's assassination in 1980, said the Beatle was a big Ronald Reagan supporter.
"John, basically, Seaman said Lennon was embarrassed by his radical past.
"He was a very different person back in 1979 and 80 than he'd been when he wrote 'Imagine.' By 1979 he, looked back on that guy and was embarrassed by that guy's naivete," he said.
Lennon released the hit song and liberal anthem "Imagine" in 1971.
The revelation about Lennon, who was probed by the FBI in 1972 after he allegedly contributed $75,000 to a group planning to disrupt the Republican National Convention, is likely to shock the peace-and-love songwriter's fans.
But critics point out that Seaman may not be the most trustworthy source.
In 1983, he pleaded guilty to stealing Lennon's photographs and diaries and was sentenced to five years of probation
.
A spokesman for Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, did not immediately return requests for comment.
