I think Mary Travers was off the pop culture radar for so many years that many have no idea of her contribution.
PP&M were slick and commercially packaged but they really were the first group to herald the counter-culture 1960s in a big way. And that's saying something.
And her look: 1963 was the time of Hairspray and heavy eye make-up. But she had the straight long hair style and no make-up look that soon became ubiquitous . I can't think of any other nationally known performer at the time looking like that. But just a few years later the look was every where.
Here they are singing "Blowin in the Wind" the classic Dylan protest song... look at how stunning and timeless she is. She could be on any red-carpet today with out changing a thing:
