Look at the map in post #35 very closely. This is about controlling the oil pipline that supplies much of Europe. Russia wants to contol the spigot.
This I agree with in addition to the believe that there are huge natural gas reserves under the caspian sea. If one looks at the US invasion of Iraq and the geography of the area, this is basically Russia balancing the equation.

I think it is kind of a startling development. We have a mass media that thrives on this kind of "scare'em up" news. While war is nothing to take lightly, I imagine that cold war rhetoric is a specialty of John McCain and Republicans. I wouldn't doubt that the Bush administration helped foster the situation for political reasons.

We have a president. Why is Dick Cheney representing the U.S. position at a critical point in the conflict? This is classic Bush Administration propaganda.

This country has lost the moral high ground because of Iraq. We also lost our economic leverage because of Bush/Cheney have driven the economy into the ground. We lost our tactical leverage, because our own troops are stretched so thin.

Putin is restoring Russia to its place of prominence and he is making Bush, Cheney and McCain look like idiots.
