Firefighters said there was a hard-wired smoke detector in the apartment that was unplugged and the battery that served as backup had been removed.

Wouldn't surprise me if half the mandated smoke detectors in the country were in this state. If they want people to leave them in working order, they need to make them so they don't constantly go off for little or no reason.

Imperfect devices, at best.
