^^Prior to becoming elected, GWB's only political positon was as Governer of Texas where he served for exactly 6 years from 1994 to 2000. That is it... 6 years of political office leading up to being president. Now don't get me wrong, I did not vote for him,(heaven forbid) but if you really think back on it, nobody really understood his positions on many of the issues that became prominant during his admisteration. He was thought to be geopolitical isolationist and campaigned against Nation Building. He was thought to be a "compassionate conservative" who favored govt education programs (no child left behind) but otherwise was thought to be a supporter of small govt and fiscal restraint. He also claimed to be conciatory and pedged to work with the opposition party

He turned out to be an foreign policy interventionalist and the first president to promote the concept of pre-emptive military operations. He also turned out to be one of the fierestest advocates (by agenda) of defict spending of any president we ever elected. Few of his supporters would have guessed that in 2000. Because he had no record, he only had his words to stand behind.. and we know the result (EDITED for civility). Also, working with Karl Rove, his administration promoted extreme partisanship as oppossed to the cooperation he pledged.

I only mention all of this bin response to people who favor Obama because he is a fresh face and think that being new to the national political arena is a plus because he has not been corrupted by the political scene. To an extent this is a bit naive in my view... clearly there is downside risk to supporing a candidate who has a very limited record to run on... sometimes in practice perspetive office holders turn out to be different than what you think they are going to be.. I am not saying Obama will turn out that way.. .just that I am not comfortable in the fact that he does not have a record to substantiate my views of him which are very favorable. Sometime we perceive people to be what we hope they are.. without a record it is easy to get fooled.
