Paramus NJ also has Blue Laws for Sunday still in effect.
If you turn on the news at Thanksgiving, you will see the parking lots, garages and everything else overflowing no Black Friday. This is an extreme example of what happens to these places every weekend and the residents do not want that on both Saturday AND Sunday.
Advocates for the Sunday work day site the unproven theory that opening it on Sunday will somehow ease the traffic burden on Saturday. In theory, this is true. But if people are willing to put up with that much hassle to come in on Saturday, there are probably many more that don't for that very same reason. Relieve some of this burden and the slack will be taken up by others that would have normally opted out.
Kind of like road building. The wider you make the road to alleviate traffic, the more people start using it until the same level of congestion is achieved.
Personally? I would like to see a more relaxed business attitude in the states. Workers are getting squeezed more and more and a lot are actually producing much less due to various factors. We are burning out our producers and catering to those that have found a way to shirk their responsibility. There has to be some way to re balance this.
We may not need 2 hour lunches and 6 hour work days, but we also do not need to combine the worst, unhealthiest work environments from every competing country into our own.
