My Dad commanded a B-47 squadron at Whiteman AFB back in the 50s and early 60s. In those days, interracial anything was illegal in the state of Missouri. When a highly skilled black NCO reported for duty, and it was noted that his wife was white, my Dad had the sad duty to explain to the NCO that if he went off base, the locals might arrest him or even lynch him. He arranged for an immediate transfer to a more northern base.

As for the statement that in the AF only blacks are the most outwardly religious, I seem to recall a white AF Academy commandant being cited for outwardly proselytizing for born-again Christianity, and cadets who were not professed Christians were allegedly humiliated by cadet first classmen. Supposedly, that's not the case anymore, but still the AF has been a hot-bed for white evangelicals for years.
