Hey Boot ;

dawn (dôn)
n.
1. The time each morning at which daylight first begins.
2. A first appearance; a beginning: the dawn of history. See Synonyms at beginning.
intr.v. dawned, dawn·ing, dawns
1. To begin to become light in the morning.
2. To begin to appear or develop; emerge.
3. To begin to be perceived or understood

I knew it was spelled right.Now piss off.
I'm afraid none of those definitions make any sense in the context of your sentence either. You cannot dawn the NFL, and you are the first human being on the planet to say otherwise. In fact, if you Google the phrase "dawn the NFL", you are the very first result. Though, there is somebody else that used the phrase "dawn the NFL jersey of their new team", which makes far more sense than yours (he just meant to use don).

Keep digging your hole deeper and deeper, though.

What you were obviously going for was "Jerry Rice is the greatest player to ever don an NFL jersey." Unfortunately when you previously heard that phrase you didn't know that don was a word so you assumed it was dawn and ran with it, much to my amusement.
