Here is the way I see it.

I am not really talking about the person who is right behind you, or right in front of you but coming out. I am talking about the person that is 5 steps behind you, you open the door for them, let them through first, and effectively give them your spot in line at the bank, store... whatever.

It is not just the opening of the door that not saying thanks is rude, but the undisclosed likelihood you just placed yourself in a line behind them and the general disinterest that you just did them favors. While I am not doing it specifically for their appreciation, the utter lack of appreciation (from women, especially) really makes me reconsider if I am being too nice for my own good.

At the end of my life, if you added up all the seconds I stood holding doors open for inconsiderate asses, it would be weeks, for something that is almost completely thankless, and ultimately lowers my opinion of people in general.
