As a serious answer, I just hold a door open for a couple of seconds as I'm passing through, unless someone obviously needs help. I usually open doors for girls, clients and potential clients but not for a mate I'm walking with.

It's nice if someone says thanks when I hold a door for them, but it doesn't bother me if they don't. I'm sure I do some things that are deemed rude by others.
