I'd say most of the time people say thanks. But I live 'up north' where people are generally friendly. Darn sarf I think there's a lot of miserable bastards who don't bother with manners. I am generalising here a bit btw.

It's similar to when driving on narrow roads, having to pull over to let oncoming traffic by (very frequent for me). I'd kind of expect a thank you wave, and 95% of the time i'd get one.

Expecting a "thank you" is nothing about arse kissing or ego's. It's just manners.
