And since you're getting it treated, here's a tidbit - dental abscesses are a common cause of cardiac surgery.

They really are horrible things. If you have an infected abscess and it bursts into your blood stream you're going to feel very ill at best for a few days.

Most will burst externally if they are on the gum but it's not worth taking the risk. Mention to the NHS direct that you have an infected abscess when you're on the phone to them and it's like they have just seen the red phone from Russia start to ring.
