Piracy, much like terrorism, is a tool used to sensationalize the passing of bills that rape the constitution. A few people do bad things, and before you know it the media is blasting it 24/7 and useless congressmen are trying to pass laws because they were lobbied to do so. Very few people that I know are capable of building a PC, and even less have the cognitive ability to pirate anything. While a small percentage of internet users wear the quantity of files they pirate as a badge of honor, the vast majority of internet users don't even know how to use bit-torrent or newsgroups. I simply do not buy into this piracy vendetta whatsoever.
Piracy is an issue, and there are plenty of people who know how to download. If they don't there is always someone at work who "can get you a copy". Companies invest a lot of time and money in to their work, so do the artists and actors, along with the staff and so on and have the right to protect their intellectual property. Now while I don't agree with this act, I do believe that piracy needs to be curtailed. The only way to do this imo ( it can't ever be stopped totally ) is to lower significantly the costs of the media, cinema tickets and so on.
