Same affect as looking at a bright light and then closing one's eyes.
The brain (eye?) gets used to processing colours and when they're taken away the affect is an image that's the negative of what was being looked at. Perhaps someone can explain it better?

It's also the source of the 'green flash' at sunset - the sudden absence of the orange Sun gives a green after image.
