Some barely recalled guide lines.
The bigger the main lense, generally the better the view, as there's more light to direct to the eye - important with higher magnification levels. At the eye piece, the larger size is for night, or low light, viewing as the eye's iris is open more, to let more light in, and matching them will help vision.
