Detroit Fire Department arson investigator Anya Kalinczyk suspects her latest serial arsonist is up to something magical with his fires. She's got lots of experience with the supernatural; she's a Lantern, a sort of medium who attracts ghosts like moths to a light, and then swallows them to destroy them. She occasionally helps out a group of ghost hunters, and has a salamander familiar named Sparky, a fire spirit who likes messing with electricity. So when she finds strange marks at the fire scenes, she's able to put the pieces together: someone is trying to summon an ancient being, one that will destroy most of the city. This very promising first novel is a solid fantasy mystery with a strong protagonist and an effective contemporary setting in a decaying Detroit.

The absolutely lovely woman who answers Locus' phone faxed me the review. Thanks, Ming!
