Any Latin American from a middle class background will assimilate better than one from a low/poor one. Heck, there's not even the need to assimilate. When I go to the US I don't feel things are different or hard to understand, it's basically the same as where I live. The only difference I see is that at my place we work to live and in the US people live to work.
Well I guess that's because you are predominally Spanish and you probably feel better among whites than you'd feel among "Laura en America" Peruvians...
and I also guess you had a different education and culture than the majority of Peruvians who are very Amerindian
