Not all Jews did it and it was not just the Jews that got involved in embezzlement constantly look at the Pheonicians and Carthaginians they were obsessed with money and greedy to the point where they scammed people over. Auctioning was invented by them. It probably is unfair to lay the blame just on the Jews most of the Semitic people got caught up in scams and crass business enterprises it was just all part of survival mode.
