My brother was an English teacher at a private high school in Tokyo for 5 years .

It's always struck me as strange how it can be possible to effectively teach English when you can't speak the language of the people you're teaching. It must make it incredibly difficult to engage the class, build rapport and virtually impossible for beginners to ask questions and clarify details.
