I think it is mostly bullshit. Preference is subjective and it varies from people to people. Most people stick to their own kind.
What TV says no one cares, in the last years people drop TV for internet.
TV says that the Kardashians, Rihana and Angelina Jolie are pretty, honestly i dont know anyone in the real life that find them extremely pretty or pretty at all in some cases.

Deep down people have preferences that differ from TV and media, Victoria Secret girls are considered the most pretty but while drinking with other guys most of them confess that they have fantasies with other kind of girl, more average.

In the Future beauty standards will be more democratic (less TV/Fashion Model authority) and people will probably more attach to their own due to the lack of brainwashing.
