I'm referring to Christianised Europe. Also, I don't know much about the subject, but I understand it was mostly pracitced amongst the upper classes, and not very common amongst the normal people.
Well, sure, but all soldiers went through it, and besides that, all landowners were part of the "citizenry" in this very egalitarian and democratic period. I'm not saying it was classless but pretty much only slaves were not eligible since they were not even Greeks, as they never enslaved other Greeks, if I'm not mistaken.
