I am either a nationalist or patriot, as I do not know the difference between them.

I know the difference is a bit blurry, I would say, I used them in understanding of modern politics.
to simplify it, you can treat answer 'patriot' as equivalent of "I dont know", then you would have dual choice- either nationalist or not.

Basically:

Patriotism = Flag.
Nationalism = Ethnic or racial group.

basically, yes. Nationalism is of more importance, patriotism mainly symbolic (hence less strong)
