I think this romanticism started in late eighties, I remember success and all what was happening around "Dances with Wolves" (however at those times Costner already tried to avoid creating idealised image of AI, if you remember the plot) etc,
later I remember American Indians portraited very cool in Northern Exposure (btw my one of the bestest series in my life).
