I mean when we think of ourselves as a race group we only hurt ourselves more and more and more because we can't control what others in our group do.

Indeed. Indians come in many phenotypes. It isn't a race, just an ancestry group.

I thought Nikki Haley was White.
She's white in the same way that you are brown, I suppose... but her parents are both Sikhs from the Punjab, if I'm not mistaken. So, that would make it easier for her to be seen as native, I suppose.

And then on the other side of the coin you have Indian-Americans like Sanjaya from American Idol who are even half white (Italian, in his case) and yet most people think he's black.

The widescale Indian migration to the US has only really just begun, and it will be this generation who decides the future of the community. If Nikki Haley and Bobby Jindal are the standard bearers, then Indian Americans will follow the trend of other Asian Americans and become model minority groups that assimilate quite well, but keep their competitive edge in academia.
