I don't think you can have it both ways. Forgetting your past , your people, your culture and your tradition basically makes you a shallow meaningless figure that will adopt anything. I really question how much the U.S. really affects the Latino dynamic. I believe the U.S. is merely an advanced experiment on many cultures/colors learning to live with each other. If you have color stratification in your society you are going the way of the United States whether you like it or not. That is less about the U.S. than it is about people refusing to accept inequality.
