I'm surprised that most were hit by the mother, my mother rarely hit me, my father was the one that did most of the beatings, the odd part from what I remember was that I used to get beat for stupid reasons, but when I messed up big, rather than getting beatings they would just talk to me about my mistake.
My mother hit me more, actually. My father would smack me on the side of the head lightly if I was out of line but my mother did far worse. She punched me, dragged me down the hall by my hair (my older sister intervened when she saw that), even choked me once to get me to stop crying (after she yelled at me an called me down to the lowest). She'd also force me to drink milk as punishment (I'm lactose intolerant). And these reactions were for even the slightest infraction.

But I have to say the worst with my mother was the insults. Also, comparing me to her friend's kid who was the same age hurt me a lot. I'd come home and be proud of myself for making 96% on a test (and damn good mark) and she would be like "Well, my friend's daughter made 98%. Pissed me off. My sister is mad about that stuff too, and I never realized it happened to her too.

Needless to say, I don't get along with my mother very well.
