Your great grandfather looked like many light skinned cape verdean do, my grandfather happened to look like him. I think him being called white in CV would have more to do with his physical appearance than what anyone actually thought his race was. This is assuming he was born and raised and his lineage is from Cape Verd. For example a Portuguese governor moving to islands would be called white on a racial level. Cape Verdeans often label each white, black, morena, mulatta, preta, etc on physical appearance rather than racial classification.
Well he was (as far as we know) of predominantly Portuguese descent but our family had been in CV, they were not recent Portuguese immigrants. I often see lighter skinned Cape Verdeans with his look so I take it that it's not too uncommon. Do you think he could pass for an average Portuguese too? Some people have said he looks strictly European but I don't know about that. My mom got a 23andme autosomal test and it said 100% white, but I don't trust it.. we have relatives who look more clearly mixed.

23andme also indicated that Oditous is my mother's 5th cousin.
