Good post. As for your last sentence, in a broader sense you could point to all the muslims who, to this day, claim that they are direct descendants of Muhamed (as if that's meaningful after 14 centuries). I think there's a special Arabic name for them, but I've forgotten what it is.

Edit: okay, I looked it up and it turns out you actually mentioned it in your post; Sayyid. Oops.
