One of the best books I have read on the topic:
Saviours of the Islamic Spirit Volume III - Entirely dedicated to Mujaddid Alf-thani Ahmed Sirhindi
And yes, Akbar essentially tried to create his own hotch potch perennialistic religion. That's why he fell into zanaadaqa, bid'ah and fahshaa'
