I'm interested what's the source for this - I don't see it in Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, etc? Is it in Imam Malik's Muwatta? Non-Sunnis such as Shi'as and the Ibadis of Oman also pray like this.

the maliki usool of fiqh is not the same as that you are assuming. it is not hadith-based but based rather on amaal e medina. this is to say the preference is given to the latter over the former.
the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions (ra) prayed in different ways in different times. there are narrations of sahaba doing rafa yadain and there are narrations in which they havent done that and this may or may not be found it saheeh sitta. there are many other books. then again ahadith which are not saheeh - that is hasan, daeef etc does not mean they are fabricated. it means they can be applied with the usool of the particular school.

so to ask for the 'source' is not correct as the source is a maliki book of usool and not sahih sittah and that is recommended to be learnt with a scholr. also even in other schools the sahih sitta are not counted as books of fiqh but as books of hadith (which they are).

i hope none of the malikis are offended with the comparison with rafidhis.
