I tried to find the saffron that you mentioned Effie, and I couldn't find a source in the USA in my first try. I found sources in other countries (Ireland the closet), but nothing here. I'll keep looking.
Okay, now you will make me look it up.
Crocus sativus
is the genus and species of the one that is used for saffron. I saw 3 or 4 cultivars (like aquila, as in
crocus sativus aquila'
) which are supposed to be the best ones to use. But, avoiding the 'field crocuses' that are posiness, what I am reading says any Crocus sativus can be used. And, these are the ones with the 3 red stigmas that we harvest and dry.
