I think genes and dna are an effect rather than a cause. So they might have 'bad genes' but it is because they've chosen to program it that way. Not totally from natural selection but actual programming based on conscious action. The good thing is that one can change one's genes (not sure by how much though in a lifetime...who knows, maybe a lot for exceptional people).

I know this sounds insane, and I thought that too when I first heard the idea. But it seems like a reasonable idea to me. It would explain all the "missing links" in evolution - because evolutionary changes occur in jumps not slow growth.
