From what I have read (and this is where I need input) you must be "in" a special place to make contact with a guide or angel?? Will they not come to you if not in a special place? I don't know where you read that but that is a "negatory".
Guides will show up when you need them, where you need them. The thing is that they don't always show themselves in a way you recognize- and this leads people to believe that they didn't show.
Any guiding experience- from "a hunch" to a 'synchronous event', to something someone says (in the physical)- to a "forced abduction" to a "dweller experience" to a meeting with dream characters in which you learn something can be a guided experience- an 'astral simulation' (in the AD Pedia, but someone asked recently so you may find it in the 'What's New' tab) can be the results of what your guide(s) are doing.
What is rare is the 'bright and shiny being taking you somewhere or showing you something'- although it does happen- but it's not the only thing guides do.
Yes, it is a good practice to develop a 'place' where you can make contact with your guides or self aspects, as Kurt Leland describes in Multidimensional Human, because it makes things easier in context, but it would be helpful if you're in a trance deep enough for you to 'see' the place you create- because once you have created this place it is 'yours' for you to use.
