I have a longstanding suspicion that forums which deal with the topic of race and ethnicity attract two or three types of people, there's the scientists, who tend to congregate around the classification sub-forum, there's the mixed people who are racially insecure and then there's the racialist 'pure' people.
So, let's have a poll. Is your ancestry either entirely made up of one heritage or at least 7/8ths made up of one heritage as far as you know? Disclaimer: Can we avoid any trashing of other people's races/ethnicities/religions. I think, if enough people participate, this could be an interesting exercise. I'm predicting 50-70% of people will be 'pure' for the purposes of this poll, clearly no-one or very few people on this forum will actually be pure. |

100% Assyrian from all sides as far as I can trace, perhaps I would have an Armenian great great great grandparent somewhere, but I'm not aware of any as far as I know.
Dr McDonald's analysis did mention that I don't seem to have any admixtures for at least 10 generations (This goes back to the 1600's possibly), and he said the same about my maternal uncle and my 3rd cousin (From my mother's side). |

I'm "pure" in this poll, purely one ethnicity (=exactly 7/8 "pure"). Nobody's really purely anything, unless they're some isolated tribals.
It's impossible to know all your ancestors since their numbers increase exponentially per generation (obviously with more overlap the farther back you go). You can't even go by DNA since the reference groups may be mixed already. |

I'm "pure" in this poll, purely one ethnicity (=exactly 7/8 "pure"). Nobody's really purely anything, unless they're some isolated tribals. However, I was trying to ask whether people had any noticeable foreign heritage, I just chose 1/8th foreign as an arbitrary cut off point (my only logic was that generally people know about any exotic lineage up to their great-grandparents but beyond that they usually find out through researching their ancestry). ---------- Post added 2011-03-02 at 00:46 ---------- neither racially nor ethnic wise... i dont really see why you say mixed race or ethnic people are insecure... alot of them are proud of it and accept it |

Actually he probably can, I heard because so many Italian-Americans have mixed with other groups the only requirement is a paternal line which can be traced to Italy/Sicily and an Italian/Sicilian surname. |

I was asked if I was full Sicilian, which I am not. For the record, two of my great grandparents hailed from Northern Italy. Liguria and Lombardia, to be exact. While the mafioso Joseph Bonanno was a first cousin several times removed, my family abhors the mafia, and I would sooner agree to be a janitor for the rest of my life than a hitman, pimp, or drug dealer. |

Of course it is impossible, and groups define themselves in different ways, for example nobody could be pure English for more than 1,500 years since the concept of Englishness didn't exist prior to that. |
