Default Why americans are obesesed with virginity ?
After my weird question about the college, I have another weird question for the americans of the forum .

Where come that obession american society have with virginity ? Does it's an inheritance of the puritanism who is one of the roots of the american culture ?

Majority of american I know have the same sexual habit than others westernerns. But it seems their society , their media are obesessed by the virginity of the young peoples .

Just looks each american young actor/actress must pretend to be virgin for success Britney Spears/Miley Cyrus/Bieber .

They uses rock christian band for promote purity ring and the subculture who go with it

They makes purity bal . I never heard of that before an american girl of my uni told me things like that was rising in the USA .

I mean it's a big paradox . Majority of young american especially female don't stay virgin and don't wait wedding for do it, but it seems like their society is obsessed with that .
It's also a big paradox, because it seem in american society women values is better if they stay virgin, but men must lost their virginity very early, it's a kind hypocrite

Americans can gives me some answer about that . How virginity is perceived in USA ? Does it's a big sibject of society ?

This is just a misconception people from abroad have. Almost all the teen dramas on American television have sexually active teenage characters. It's really blown out of proportion, and it's mostly a Christian thing.

Although, our culture loves to demonize promiscuity, which I personally I don't understand, and I've lived in the States since I was two years of age.

Your college question was on point, but this virginity issue is largely a farce, even among the fundamentalist Christians in the US. All of this stuff about purity rings etc. is nonsense. Vast majority of Americans have sex before marriage.

Your question would be better addressed towards some Muslim country where perhaps the women, if not the men, actually practice this virginity until marriage. Here, even if the girl is protecting her "virginity" to not become pregnant, avoid disease, religious reasons, etc. she may be giving out handjobs and more.

Agree it's mostly a christian thing. But the number of true christian in USA is very high especially in the bible belt .

I lost my virginity to a 17 year old girl, in a car, in the parking lot of a church, when I was 16. Church wasn't in session... it was like 2 AM LOL. Anyway my story isn't unique. Abstinence translates roughly into handjobs.

That kind of mentality is not prevalent where I live. It's mostly in the bible belt, like you said. Also, I think non-practicing "Christians" outnumber real Christians in the USA. Most Christian-identified Americans know barely anything about the bible. A lot of them just identify as Christian out of familial tradition. Those articles are legitimate, but this purity phenomena is not an issue throughout the whole country.

It was the aim of the subject . Why american medias and society are obsessed with virginity, if their peoples don't stay virgins . Because daddy wants to be a good Christian, and doesn't want his precious daughter getting knocked up or catching AIDS etc. However, rather than being pragmatic about it, they push this ideological and unrealistic "abstinence" concept. Unfortunately for them, this isn't Saudi Arabia or Iran where you can stone your daughter to death for banging her high school sweetheart on prom night.

I think it's only a big subject in the context of young men with heavy amounts of testosterone. Just like young men will always jokingly say they have a huge genitalia. They will desire to have the unattainable or extremely rare like a huge genitalia or a virgin.

Just like caviar is desired because of it rarity and expensive price. It's a status symbol. Virginity is desired by a young foolish male in his mate due to its perceived rarity.

Any mature male knows a virgin women is probably going to be worst, due to inexperience and the possible emotional breakdown during the act .

I live in the "bible belt" which also has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the nation. That ought to tell you something.

Well i will go for a virgin but not because the status. I will go for her because the self-respect.
Many people think of sex as an sport, when i see people lusting easily i think they are weak and easily to break down because of the lack of self control.

Well you must be planning to marry a 16-18 year old girl then. Because if she is like 25 and still a virgin, it's probably because nobody wanted any. Since most men aren't picky, that is really bad.

That's not in all U.S. schools. The schools I went to did not promote abstinence. If there was an abstinence club in my school, I never knew about it. We had health/sex education class where they would teach the students how to have safe sex. I heard they teach abstinence-only sex education in Texas schools, though, as well as some other states. However, like amerinese said, it does more harm than good. Teen pregnancy rates are much higher among jurisdictions that bestow that policy on their local schools. Here is a trailer to an excellent documentary I've watched about social attitudes towards teenage sex in the USA:

What about the girls that chose to stay virgins?
I know they are not many but there are girls like that.
There is some people, guys and girls, that want to have sex and they don't care about the partner, they do it because it is a trend. There is another people that are very picky and prefer to wait until they get the perfect partner.

Very interesting perspective. I would not view sex as a sport, but a mutual pleasure with the possibility of offspring with varying degrees. I certainly see some men viewing sex as a competitive sport.

An attractive 25 year old woman 99% of the time will have already met their "perfect partner", had a relationship, maybe married and divorced with no children because it wasn't as perfect as she thought.

Like my stepmom, she was a virgin, married her high school sweetheart at 18, came home and walked in on him banging some other chick, divorced him, married my dad a few years later... sure, she waited until marriage, but apparently she was young and naive. These stories are a dime a dozen, rural conservative Christians marrying young, then divorcing in their early 20's. This is what conservative Christian abstinence promotes on a good day. On a bad day it promotes blatant ignorance, unprotected sex, teenage pregnancy, and spread of STD's.

I'm pretty sure most of them engage in it because they're horny, not because they think it's trendy. You want a virgin, but are you a virgin yourself? Virginity is overrated, IMO.

It is overrated for you, I have my own values.

Without sound cheesy or gay, I would risk to say love is better that just sex. Sex with a girl or a guy you barely know is assisted masturbation.
It feels better to have sex with a girl you know and spend months chasing after her, there is a different connexion.

Wheeel ... men should no talk about love or emotions, so forget this comment

I don't promote virginity because Christianity, I say if someday I marry and take it seriously i would do it with a virgin girl
I think abstinence is good to develop character. I am still under 25yo, so i guess i would marry someone around 18-20yo.

The problem now is the economical situation, many people think they will get nothing in life so people is more hedonist now.
If there were more hopes people would be more assertive in their decisions.

It's not gay. I'm gay, and I don't have your outlook. Cheesy? Probably. Love is nice and all, but a virgin is not necessary for that. You didn't answer my question before. Are you a virgin or not? If you're not, then you have no business thinking you deserve one. I think it's funny when some straight men talk about virgins as though they're some kind of prize.
