Here's specific African American foods that is based off a mix of West African/European/Native American cooking.
Are you sure about those foods being only African American? The first one is Couve, the second is feijao fradinho. These are foods I eat at least once a week. They are cooked pretty much the same way in Brazil. I don't know what the third thing is.

By the looks of it: Arroz blanco con habicuelas blancas y chuletas (Rice with white beans and chop). We eat it almost all the time here in Santo Domingo, the combination of rice, red beans and chicken is usually called "the flag".

Just a note: that something is not exclusively African American doesn't negate that it's more-so a part of African American culture and customs than it is the American mainstream.

Yeah, we don't do the white beans, or at least I don't. Feijao Carioca for me But the meal is familiar. Meat, beans and rice. Typical Brazilian meal. So since there are similarities with all these meals what is the common thread? If it Africa? Is it slavery? Is it European? Indigenous?

Beats me. One is tempted to say Africa, but one have to remember that Africa is not, hasn't been, and perhaps never will be, a single monolithic group.

You are right, Africa is Diverse. I just find it interesting that these foods are found predominately in the Afram community, Brazil, and in DR. I've had similar foods in Cuba. These places all seem to be places with huge African Diasporic populations. But again, I really don't know what the true link is.

In Bahia, we have the most African Food in the Western Hemisphere. And it is not at all similar to these foods. The food is a mix of African foods but mostly from Angola or Guinea Bissau. So, I'm drifting towards the common thread being Slavery (influencing the style of cooking), followed by African domesticated foods (Black-eyed peas, Okra, etc). And Beans, which I think are native to the Americas.

Technically speaking the term "African American" should be used to refer to recent migrants from Africa to America, it doesn't make sense to call the black Americans (who descend from the slaves from in the 1800) with a term like "African American", they don't have a recent cultural connection with Africa anymore, they are Americans. We might as well call Americans who came from Europe "European Americans".

The true AAs are the recent migrants from Africa who reside in America.

Black American or Negroid American should be the correct semantic if strictly speaking, as what ties them to Africa more is appareance and not language, religion, or overall way of life.

Agreed. The only real thing that ties "African Americans" with Africa is their appearance and obviously their origins, just as any other American, no one really originated in America. African Americans should simply be called "Black Americans"

No, black American is not good, because black is a race, it could be "anyone".

We are a specific people, and no, the totality of our origin is not Africa or even West Africa, haven't you learned anything from the DNA studies on this board?

Not that anyone really knows or cares where Sicily is.

How many people can find it on a map even in New York? I bet half those Guidos in Jersey can't even find it. haha

It's the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Some moron might accidentally point to Sardinia, but I doubt anyone would have a problem.

You forget, there are a lot of Italian-American meatheads with tattoos of the Italian peninsula and whatnot.
