European Spaniards have always been 'white' as far as I know.

It is/was the 'Hispanics' (European mixed Amerikan/Amerind) who have not been 'white', like (relatively white skin) Mexicans for example. And this was/is due to politickal reasons, caused by early Spanish/French/English colonial divisions. Spaniards largely were excluded from French or English territories.

Now that 'whites' are becoming a minority in the US, 'Hispanics' probably will turn 'white' if that already hasn't happened… it's politickal, nothing more/less. Being "white" has little to do with skin-color (otherwise NE Asians would be "white") compared to (WASP) politickal power.

And, unless I'm mistaken (?), the "one-drop rule" was used in the US South in-response to blacks being freed and earning legal 'Rights' as citizens. They didn't want black men mixing with white women, hence anybody who was "one-drop" (black) politickally was "100% black".

But even that's not true anymore ~ things & attitudes change over time.

Now that a great many people are "race-mixing" in the US, such racial preservation attitudes will deteriorate even further, and faster. New sub-races will emerge, new phenotypes, new looks, new body types, new specializations, etc.

It actually is pretty awesome… to see all the results, from a Scientific perspective. It's like witnessing the birth of hundreds of new species of insects (as a comparison) due to a very special/rare circumstance.

This is true for the most part. Results vary depending on the identity of the they doing the "lumping".

By looking at the half syrian and half mexican person, people will see him as white, but if he tells them he is half syrian and half mexican, the people he told will now see him as "half spanish half middle eastern". But of course, people who don't know him will see him as White.

EDIT: That happens alot with (non-super ambigious looking) white hispanics, people will assume they are white upon looking at them, but once they figure out they're puerto rican, cuban or argentinian or whatever, people will then see them as non-white and "hispanic"
