Basically I have seen comments on youtube, yahoo answers, some forums like these, and other mainstream sites which have something to do with racism.

Now I view the internet as a place where someone can hide behind a screen and truly speak their mind, something they would not be able to do in public. Yet when I see internet racism, two thoughts come to mind which collide with each other, I question myself is it

1. A keyboard racist who is typing up the thoughts that people are just scared to speak about in public

OR

2. A loner or a loser who represents the thoughts of a really small minority

basically, does racism on the internet show just how racist society is in general? do internet racists represent the thoughts of many or are they just losers who are a small minority?

Most people who speak on-line under youtube channels etc are people somehow emotional about the aspect. If its a video about race, most comments would be either from racists or anti-racists. The "I dont care" group, which is probably in majority, stays silent. So its not representive in statistics at all.

Two, views may be more extreme indeed, due to anonymity.

I'm a lot more 'racist' online than I am IRL, so if I'm anything to go by then racism online is not a true representation of the level of racism in society. I think a lot of online racist remarks are gratuitous snipes at the politically correct establishment which has restricted freedom of speech in the outside world; people blow off their general anger at feeling hamstrung by the system by being outlandishly offensive.

Absolutely, I'm no martyr so my only outlet for politically incorrect ranting, aside from when I'm in the company of close friends & family, is the internet.

Agree with you and jr1 for the most part. I accidentally voted for the wrong option though.

To be honest, I think most "internet racists" are just guys trying to get their real life frustrations out but are too afraid to do in public in fear of the consequences. I'm not a big fan of the politically correct establishment so I can understand to an extent why some of them vent their issues on the internet where they can remain anonymous.

i never knew racism and race was such a big deal until i started searching the internet... this is where issues like that are talked about and no one has the audacity and guts to say any of this in person... although i do question at times if regular everyday people i know are the ones that are posting these hateful messages but who knows

no, anonymity on the internet makes people grow balls, most people who will readily talk shit on the internet are scared to do it in real life. its easier when you aren't face to face with someone to say something out of line.



most people, atleast from my generation don't care too much about race, there is still some racism lingering, but its not as fervent as it once was.

overall internet racism in not a good indicator of anything because i can assume that being on this forum that most mexicans and chileans are really racist but i have encountered many mexicans and chileans and none of them are really like that, but for some reason there are a good number of racist mexicans and chileans here

im curious who are they mostly racist to? as far as im concerned i know the majority of chile is within the mestizo-castizo range so are they racist to people who are more native looking or are they racist to anybody that is not castizo?

Well not Indians, Pakistanis.

And I am not pretending to be anything, sure a large amount of time in the northeast and outside of the south has changed my views and lifestyle but I don't forget where I was born.

So what if I don't drink moonshine and go fishing every weekend, doesn't mean I haven't lived down here for a long time and doesn't mean I wasn't born here.
