I think ultimately its the same as saying "who were the Crusaders"? The Crusades were initially pushed by the Italian state who were influenced by the Byzantines who were getting their asses handed to them by the Turks, but the main military contingent from the first two crusades where the Holy Roman Empire and Normans and later from the third onward constituted countries all over western Europe. I doubt the Moors were any different in this assembly and I`m sure after a few generations there was a tolerance from the people that kept them in power

First, and prior to the muslim arrival, were those form Mauretania Tingitana (mauri=moor) who invaded Spain during the Roman Empire times.
By 711 they "invaded" Spain again, but now as muslims (they were called by a visigothic ruler to fight against the king, Rodrigo). They realized the country was driven by the anarchy and decided to send more troops to establish a permanent control. Many hispanorromans accepted the new rulers as a better option than the goths, some of them embracing the new faith and others keeping their beliefs. A ruling class came from the Near East -mainly Syria- and built up the "Caliphate of Cordoba" when the Ummayyad were subsituted by the Abbasidas in the muslim world (the spanish caliphas were Ummayyad) But there were more invasions from north Africa; those of Almoravides, Almohades and Benimerines. They occuped muslim Spain driven by a fanatic interpretation of Islam wich was rejected by both muslim and christian spaniards. Finaly, the term moor was used to designate any muslim without taking into account their origin or ethnicity. In Spain, the majority of muslims were of indigenous stock (more or less mixed with the above quoted, who were a minority when compared to hispanorromans) |

This video claims they were Arab by Saudi scholars (English start after 2 min). He also said the kings and queens of Europe use to "vie with one another to learn Arabic." I never heard that one. |

So Berbers were just these people that the Arabs hired basically to fight for them? Why did they allow the Arabs to be the leaders? And how did black Africans come into play in all this? I thought Berbers were not black? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariq_ibn-Ziyad |

I thought Berbers were not black? There are like Black people you can hire and stuff to like fight people you don't think are as cool. Sudanese horseman were famous for being good archers. Ever try shooting an arrow from a horse? It's damn hard. There is also something called 'slavery' and sometimes when you bang your slave all night long she pops out a baby after nine or so months. You might not want your baby to be a slave. |

The official version on history books here is mostly north african berbers with an arab rulling elite, possibly syrian. But i've also heard of slavic and black troops/slaves. Also some black troops during the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, the Black Guard, composed of Senegalese slaves chained together, who defended the Almohad sultan. And in the records of Moriscos expelled name a few black slaves who worked in agriculture. |

"Moors" were Mexicans that came to Spain singing México lindo. Aren't you the guy that declares himself unable to distinguish an average French from an average Mexican? If it is so, all the explanations about this issue we could give you would be unuseful. ---------- Post added 2011-11-16 at 13:25 ---------- Berbers led by Arabs. |

The moors in spain?... pecata minuta... NOTHING compared with mexicans (and many others central-american) in tejas or california, arizona etc etc.
Spain won war against moors, expelled them out and the jews too. Spain has today their own original language, religion and whatever. I wonder if you, the wasp american, are capable to do the same. And I think that is evident.... NOOOOO!!! you can't. Tu comprender manito? (llueve desde hace 3 semanas y estoy hasta los huevos, cago'n dios) |

The moors in spain?... pecata minuta... NOTHING compared with mexicans (and many others central-american) in tejas or california, arizona etc etc. christianism is Middle Eastern and catholicism developed in Rome infact ancient Andalucians weren't catholic they were another branch of christianism anyway the important moors were berber because moorish architecture resembles Maghreb's architecture and that type of architecture looks nothing like pre-al-andalus iberian architecture because that type of art can't come from the mind of a western European [IMG][IMG][/IMG] this is more western European [/IMG] |
