I think that The Cosby Show is a perfect example for this thread. Many different phenotypes and such.

Great post indeed. To add to your point I would say It is quite rare for an Afram family to all be uniform in skin tone. In my own family are people who are extremely dark as well as people who are extremely light. As Jonboy said we have a very wide range of phenotypes.

Nope, because they aren't descendants of West African slaves.
But they are descendants of africans 2
So they are actual african americans, at least if you take that term literally?

Exactly

A good example of an (really) African-American is Barack Obama.

It may simply be a regional difference, but here in Texas Africans in general irregardless to what region they are from are considered black, perhaps not in the sense of "American Made" but black none the less. Though we do make the distinction that they are "African" in the literal sense as you said.

There was a recent experience in my class. My teacher wanted us to tell the class a little bit about ourselves and what are some common questions people ask us. One girl said a common question people asked her was what her ethnicity is and she said he was Black, both parents are Black though she has other heritage, but she's still Black. Most of the non Black students and the teacher(who is Russian) looked really shocked. My friend who is East Indian said she thought she was Mexican. I knew the girl was African American, but it was the non Black students who seemed to be stunned. I'm African American and I know we can have a rainbow of phenotypes and some of us could almost pass for other ethnicities. Have you encountered Aframs who you thought was another ethnicity?
your dead right, ive seen some Afram looking Australoid or Filipono, i'll get you the pictures kind of scary.

i think its bias to call all Afram black since there are afew who aren't even black or Mostly black!

So Obama is not african american?
Obama is a Real African American because his Dad is African and his Mother irish American.

White south Africans in America are not considered African American but White strange since they are born in Africa and have African Parents living in America who are not called African American but White.

Stupid Bias Americans idiots

The majority of us Aframs are mostly black, lol.

@ Tuck. The Cosby show is a great example of the range of Afram phenotypes. My family also covers the whole spectrum from European fair skinned to Dinka dark

This.

"African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans, and formerly as American Negroes) are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black populations of Africa.[2] In the United States, the terms are generally used for Americans with at least partial Sub-Saharan African ancestry."

And the fact that he looks like one and identifies as one.

what makes Obama African American then?
He is heavily Americanized.

yeah i know, i was just being specific...some people see "african americans" as those who have lived in america for hundreads of years, while others see it as any black person in america no matter how long their family been in united states....

so dominicans who grew up in america and "look black" and identify with black ppl would also be considered african american, right?

You're confusing me with that question. Obama married an Afram, and cultrally assimilated with the Afram community and considers himself an Afram. But if an Afram marries and African, than they are still African American because of heritage.

so dominicans who grew up in america and "look black" and identify with black ppl would also be considered african american, right? Not in my opinion, because a Dominican with a Spanish last name would be "Latino", not matter how black they look. Race in the US is very wierd.

Nope, because they aren't descendants of West African slaves.
But Afro Latinos are also west african slave descendants and you people don't consider them black either, because they aren't americanized.

The first definition is the most accurate one.

True some people have a different view of it, but i have found that people who believe the former view, are few and far between.

so dominicans who grew up in america and "look black" would also be considered african american, right?
In my region most definitely, this is true for just about every Afro descendant from the Caribbean to South America.

The term african american is weird anyhow..First of all because it are people who are not born in Africa. 2. In most of the cases never go ''back'' to africa 3. Or even haven't seen africa even ones in their lives.
4. White americans aren't called european americans either, so what's the use of the term afram?

Because they are Africans of ancestry but American in nationality(as they are born in the US), like chinese americans, korean americans etc.

exactly! thats why i feel like there is a double standard there. "obama" has an "african" last name, no matter how "AFRAM" he looks ...
race and ethnicity shouldnt be always intertwined
i think globanization tends to dim the lines of ethnic groups, in the next 20 years the US is gonna have alot more classifications

i agree, dinka Dark is impossible for Afram.
i love the Dinka people because they have really dark skin but not only that because they're skin is smooth unlike most Africans

---------- Post added 2011-03-22 at 21:25 ----------

i have never seen a Afram Dinka Dark, but i have seen some that are a really Dark brown which is considered Black by most
