I think that The Cosby Show is a perfect example for this thread. Many different phenotypes and such. |

There was a recent experience in my class. My teacher wanted us to tell the class a little bit about ourselves and what are some common questions people ask us. One girl said a common question people asked her was what her ethnicity is and she said he was Black, both parents are Black though she has other heritage, but she's still Black. Most of the non Black students and the teacher(who is Russian) looked really shocked. My friend who is East Indian said she thought she was Mexican. I knew the girl was African American, but it was the non Black students who seemed to be stunned. I'm African American and I know we can have a rainbow of phenotypes and some of us could almost pass for other ethnicities. Have you encountered Aframs who you thought was another ethnicity? ![]() i think its bias to call all Afram black since there are afew who aren't even black or Mostly black! ![]() ---------- Post added 2011-03-22 at 21:03 ---------- So Obama is not african american? ![]() White south Africans in America are not considered African American but White ![]() ![]() Stupid Bias Americans ![]() ![]() |

your dead right, ive seen some Afram looking Australoid or Filipono, i'll get you the pictures @ Tuck. The Cosby show is a great example of the range of Afram phenotypes. My family also covers the whole spectrum from European fair skinned to Dinka dark ![]() |

what makes Obama African-American? "African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans, and formerly as American Negroes) are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black populations of Africa.[2] In the United States, the terms are generally used for Americans with at least partial Sub-Saharan African ancestry." And the fact that he looks like one and identifies as one. what makes Obama African American then? |

He married into the African American community. ![]() ---------- Post added 2011-03-22 at 21:16 ---------- This. so dominicans who grew up in america and "look black" and identify with black ppl would also be considered african american, right? |

so what if african americans who choose to go back to africa and marry africans, are they no longer african american? so dominicans who grew up in america and "look black" and identify with black ppl would also be considered african american, right? Not in my opinion, because a Dominican with a Spanish last name would be "Latino", not matter how black they look. Race in the US is very wierd. |

yeah i know, i was just being specific...some people see "african americans" as those who have lived in america for hundreads of years, while others see it as any black person in america no matter how long their family been in united states.... so dominicans who grew up in america and "look black" would also be considered african american, right? |

The term african american is weird anyhow..First of all because it are people who are not born in Africa. 2. In most of the cases never go ''back'' to africa 3. Or even haven't seen africa even ones in their lives. |

You're confusing me with that question. Obama married an Afram, and cultrally assimilated with the Afram community and considers himself an Afram. But if an Afram marries and African, than they are still African American because of heritage. race and ethnicity shouldnt be always intertwined i think globanization tends to dim the lines of ethnic groups, in the next 20 years the US is gonna have alot more classifications ![]() |

The majority of us Aframs are mostly black, lol. i love the Dinka people because they have really dark skin but not only that because they're skin is smooth unlike most Africans ![]() ---------- Post added 2011-03-22 at 21:25 ---------- i have never seen a Afram Dinka Dark, but i have seen some that are a really Dark brown which is considered Black by most |
