Brazil's catwalks are too white, say protesters | World news | The Guardian
Santos added that while racial inclusion had advanced considerably in higher education, with more than 160 public universities now supporting racial quotas, the fashion industry lagged behind. She said: "According to the latest census we blacks represent 50.8% of the Brazilian population. This means an event which presents a majority of people with typically European characteristics does not represent the beauty and wealth of Brazilian ethnicity. Brazil is a country that still insists on emphasising its European side and discriminating against its beautiful indigenous and Afro-Brazilian populations. We do not want catwalks that look like catwalks in Switzerland or England." This is coming from an Afro-Brazilian, not some American with a biased opinion of Brazil so naysayers read and weep! |

Hmm, maybe the European looking Brazilians, who tend to be the wealthiest in the country, have the time and money to go to casting calls and such. Also, the models are probably doing more international campaigns, in America and Europe, and most of the consumers of fashion tend to be whites, so they're trying to appeal to them. I do agree though, that there needs to be more indigenous and Afro-Brazilians models because they're also beautiful.

I don't know why people focus so much on the fashion industry. It's not really important. It's superfluous, just like most of the media.
I prefer to concentrate on the first statement of the first paragraph: Santos added that while racial inclusion had advanced considerably in higher education, with more than 160 public universities now supporting racial quotas, the fashion industry lagged behind. |

If anyone is to blame, it's the international fashion industry. |

Fashion industry is gay. I never knew Brazil was so racialised though, I think its just the paraidgm of beauty at the moment in South America appears to be this look, but it will change, im sure at some point int he future there will be quotas for white girls ! Its already happening in America, ghetto booty, kim Karshidan etc all creeping into common perceptions of beauty. In south America those who are successful are inevitably white though, whether thats racism, discrimination I don't know, but success is attractive I suppose. Some of those mulattas are beautiful though, Id love to see them on the fashion walk! |

In a country where european phenotypes dominate wealthy social class and are the symbol of beauty standard its kind of logical that many pred black people will likely to identify with pardo, and many pardos will claim being of entirely or predominant european ancestry, which doesnt mean they really are. |

This is the leader of the manifestation, Frei David dos Santos (according to his DNA test his ancestry would be 68,20% SSA African, 30,80% European and 1,0% Amerindian; interestingly both his yDNA and his mtDNA haplogroup are Native American!).
