Default Black race grows in Puerto Rico
This was translated from Google, as it original source is in Spanish.

http://translate.google.com/translat...4.html&act=url
There are now more blacks than 10 years ago.

At least that is reflecting the view expressed by most residents of Puerto Rico in the 2010 Census.

Contrary to the results of 2000, in which only 8% of the population said it was blacks, now 12.4% claimed to be of that race. This change represented an increase of 52.3% in the number of people who identified with that race. These numbers refer to the total population.

But when evaluating the responses of those 18 years or more, the increase is higher because 12.6% identify with that race. Comparing those numbers with 2000, the evidence suggests an increase of 60.5% for Puerto Ricans who identify as black.

Similarly, there was an increase in the number of people who identified themselves as American Indian or Alaska Native (48.8% more) and in the box for "other races", which climbed 11.5% as compared to 2000.

On the other hand, 7.8% less than the Puerto Ricans be said of the white race. In total, 75.8% of respondents said they were white, compared with 80.5% who gave that answer in 2000, according to the Census. And, only 3.3% of the population said to be of two or more races. The other, marked one race.

The results on the black race are very important because it is the first time since 1800 that an official document reflects an increase in the number of people in that race, said the lawyer and expert on the subject of race, Daniel Nina.

He explained that in 1800 half the population was black and half were white, according to documents of the time. In 1930 it was said that 30% of the population was black, and data from 1950 confirmed this trend.

"Consistently the race is invisible. This is the first time, historically, goes up (the reason for black people, this time for what they say citizens), "said Nina.

This suggested that this reflects the awareness work they have done many sectors and that more people have learned that being black is not bad.

Nina explained that there is a difference in color be black and be based on identity, as many who are black and others do not recognize that they are not, are identified as such.

"This reflects that we begin to be more realistic, it's a matter of identity. People begin to assume identity with pigmentation, "he said.

"The 2000 Census was great. The Census does not believe that we were so white, "Nina joked, recalling the discussions that the results of the Census. I was of the ones who marked Black on the Census(alongside Taino and White )

In the link it will say grow race in Brazil because of bad translating of the title.

congratulations!!!

Nice avatar jibaro... but the modern spanish flag, red yellow red, is an invention from the XIX century.
The conquistador should carry the ancient (and modern) Castile flag, the lion and the castle over white and red background.
Never mind...

It's not that the Black Pueroto Rican population is growing faster. The thing is that more people are accepting themselves as Black. The same is happening in Brazil. Despite the propaganda in thos forum that Brazil is a dominant European country, the censuses show that every year more and more Brazilians are giving up on classifying themselves as "Whites" and are moving to the Pardo and Black categories. In a few years Blacks and Pardos will be a clear majority in the census (because in real life, in the streets, they are visibly the majority)

although neither brazil nor puerto rico is a predominatly black country... what i see is that mixed puerto ricans and brazilians if they are of predominately african ancestry will identify themselves as being black

Why do hardly any people in Puerto Rico identify as mixed? It seems like the vast majority choose either white or black

Yes pretty much inferiority complex of the latin americans.. as long as there is progress in this issue the studies will reflect more properly the reality that you live on streets. Same goes with amerindians claiming to be mestizo, and mestizos claiming to be white...

A poster in this forum likes to re-post several times genetic studies claiming that Brazil is 80% European. You claimed to have visited Brazil, so do you believe that (even though you claimed to have visited São Paulo and Rio, which have more Whites than most Brazilian areas)

i really doubt that people think that putting white on paper will give them higher pay and will get thier coffee quicker... maybe they just put it there because they look predominately european or that there skin is light

There is no way brazil would be 80% european. For what i have seen its something like 40% european 30% pardo and 30%black

Or because they prefer to identify as it because it is the epitetome of beauty, believe me, seeing the comments on the PR newspapaer, there is racism and there are PR who have admitted that here in the island there is racism.

I used to think that way, but there si subtle racism, here on the island, the whole idnetifying as blanco seem like a kind of rejection to their non-white heritage.PR love their whit heritage, they seem that it is beautiful.

windmill I invite you to read the comments and see what I am saying is not true.

The PR's with significant Afro ancestry that I came across seem to have no problem admitting there is racism on the island. If you're asking Latinos about whether there is racism in Latin America you need to start with the Afro influenced people.

It's colorism and clasism more than anything.
