I'd say is more colorism and clasism more than anything.
And subtle racism, like by gestures and "ïndirectas"rather than "get the heck out of here you *******r" that is common in the US.

i do think puerto rico definately discrimnates by class but that doesnt have to do with race for example residente of calle 13 may look white but he is very cafre and is seeing as a low class person

Uhum, but what part of "subtle"you don't seem to get, you will never see open racism in PR ever, it is subtle, by indirect and gestures, you won't see KKK neither.

---------- Post added 2011-03-25 at 21:43 ----------

There were people commenting on the newspaper that PR got its black populatiobn's growth because of Dominicans, and I reacted "What the heck!!"

Now I see that beign Black s being Dominican(Not that bieng Dominican is bad, but they aren't the only people with black admix here, there are black and mixed black prs)"

just because its subtle doesnt make it a big issue.. there is subtle racism everywhere but it doesnt affect your position in society

And that is the problem, when people ignore it because it is not a "big issue" and continue with the "white"classification crap.

but i thought that you wanted puerto rico to identify with being white, black and use american racial standard classifications... so to fix this problem we can just we are mixed and ignore all these other racial classifications

I want people who are mixed identify as so, ad the ones who are pred black as black, but not all people including mestizo castizos, mulattoes and all use white because it is the most beautiful, because here in PR people think white=beauty

lmfao...Some island PR's on the internet can be pretty racist and anti-dominican, don't know if they're representative though.

so its ok for predominately black puerto ricans to identify as black but when it comes to castizos or other predominately european puerto ricans they have to identify as being mixed?

A PR who looks 100 like an Spanird can classfy as whie and I will have no problem, but if I see an Jackie Guerrido type or a mariliana Torres type identyfying as white, then thee is the problem.

let see, a tego Calderon type is black to me, a Bizcocho type is black to me, anything that look like a sub-saharan african is black to me, now a black with fair hair and ethiopian looking is mixed.

but you dont know maybe its those ethiopan looking ones that are identifying as black on the census but since you that is wrong isnt it best just to reject the notion of racial classifications?

They should identify as all ancestries, like I did, bu what can i do, I can't go to everybody's home to tell how they should classify, they themsleves should know how to do it, but the problem is that some don't know form where the heck they came from, because there is lackk of culture and tradition here and people are living "älgarete", and that is why things are a mess on the island.

i dont think we should focus on who we were in the past... our ancestors are dead and are long gone we should focus on who we are now and just enjoy ourselves

Well, we now are a mess of a people thanks for forgetting the past and our traditions, now we are a bunch of rapists, killers, womenabusers, thief and drug dealers thankss for leaving tradition.

This was the avatar of PR before:

this is the avatar of PR now:

Look at that, la isla del encanto and an armed killer, that is not what I want for an avatar of my people!!

But what culture and values, if they have been getting lost, and now what we have for youth are the future killers and drug dealers, i see you don't read PR newspapers, how do you expect to ha a culture and forget our past, our past is our root, we can live without the past, a tree can live without its root, never, what I know about PR culture I learned it from my gradnparents, they instilled those values on me, but the majority of PR aren't doing it, because they are thinking like you "the heck with the past, let go with the future"and leave the culture and traditions, and look now the results of it, nothing postive.

Yes, it is our avatar now, because people choose to live the present, so watch and see how PR is now a waste:

---------- Post added 2011-03-25 at 22:38 ----------

With the comments I have watched on the newspapers I say there is racism in the island, there is no better proof than that, it left me with my mouth open.

I don't think you can have it both ways. Forgetting your past , your people, your culture and your tradition basically makes you a shallow meaningless figure that will adopt anything. I really question how much the U.S. really affects the Latino dynamic. I believe the U.S. is merely an advanced experiment on many cultures/colors learning to live with each other. If you have color stratification in your society you are going the way of the United States whether you like it or not. That is less about the U.S. than it is about people refusing to accept inequality.

im just talking about how people shouldnt focus on thier ancestors in terms of claiming an ethnic or racial identity.. they should just in case claim to be a puerto rican and forget the whole racial classification standard because that can not be applied to puerto rico

But puertorican is a nationality, there is no puertorican race, race can just be ignored, is like trying to ignore oneself, well, but look at it, everyone on here wants tyo be white, despite having non-white ancestry, is that good for you, it is appropiate to do so, no, unnaceptable for someone wo accept its non-white roots is inconcebible for equally mixed people to identify as white because it is beautiful or everything like, I am not an apathethic perosn.

PR seem to live like like the mokeys who don't see don't har and don't watch.

puerto rican may not be a race but we are a multi generational mixed race people that can not be classified in just white or black... although we have people in our population that lean to either side of the spectrum but nonetheless they are still mixed.
