Why are people in southern europe , and the surronding mediterranean sea (more so in the african side) more likely to have strong personalities compared to people in central/northern europe? I have noticed the former are also more prone to exhibit behaviors such being highly competitive, jealously.

What does determine that a society turns more agressive than others..?

Interesting question it is the same in Asia, south east asians tend to be more open and have less jealousy while the people from north east asia tend to be more jealous. I guess it got to do with working hours and climate.

Anyway your theory have some flaws like Russia, most part of the inhabited Russia is located in the North-East and they are very expressive and emotional in some aspects.

sorry.. my post was directed more to western europe, rather to eastern part.. though i wouldnt rule out certain differences but in a less intensive way.

I would not say, that people in Southern Europe have stronger personalities.
Cultures how people express themselves and what is considered acceptable
are quite different.

E.g. Finns are quite stubborn and appreciate freedom and individualism,
we go through 'a gray stone', if needed according to a Finnish saying.
But you do not have to explode, yell and go bananas, just do it and get
it done. A Finn has patience up until to the last point and after that I recommend
running to all bystanders.

i would say finns are kind of an exception i have always perceived them as being more agressive and masculine compared to scandinavians or even the dutch/north germans, yet their overall subjetive personality wouldnt be perceived as so determinated and strong . You could see the latter example in how men do approach their local women over there (if they ever do). In countries like italy the competence for women is much higher and men can be much more agressive to get what they want, in northern euro countries you can see black foreigners dating pretty local women yet nobody would challenge him to try to get his gf , neither they will ever raise an eyebrow... Try to see an above average looking woman in italy or anywhere in southern europe walking hand to hands with a negro or middle eastern looking dude.. guys would never accept it and raise eyebrows all the time.

The same case of finland could be applied to people from celtic countries, they are only more agressive when they are drunk... specially ireland.

Men in southern europe and in lesser degree east-europe .. still have the feeling that they own their country women only cause they happen to belong to the same ethnic group or nationality...

I find it aggressive and inappropriate as a Finn, it is so far away from my world view
how to express feelings in public.

It was quite common to end up in a fight with a taxi driver EVERY DAY when they tried to steal your money and for whatever reason (succeeded to rob me 3-4 times when they locked the doors and threatened, I am a small female after all).

ps By robbing I mean you have to pay 50e instead of a correct price 2,5e to get out of the car unharmed e.g. And I am not accusing anyone, just stating.

I reported the incidents to the Finnish Embassy.

There were 3-4 men, who claimed to be inspectors/police and demanded 100e, passport etc. They did not let me leave in the middle of the street for an hour. Finally they let me go because I managed to call the Embassy's help line.

They tried to find out my nationality and finally when 1 called me 'Turkish'
trying to insult me, I told him that I am Finnish. Quite natural for fairly blond
green eyed girl to be Turkish anyway.

And this was not in Italy, 200-300 km's east of Italy.

Anyway the idea was to say, that people in general are more prone to show
aggressive behaviour (for whatever reasons) in Southern Europe.
