Default Billionaires of The World in 2011
The latest Forbes list of the world's billionaires is out:

http://www.forbes.com/2010/03/10/wor...2010_land.html

Some observations.

1. The richest man in the world is a mexican citizen of lebanese arab descent.

2. For the first time there are more billionaires in Asia than in Europe (including Russia).

3. America's share of billionaires has shrunk from about half to about a third. But numerically it is still by far the #1.

4. Turkey's billionaire population has grown dramatically to 38 exceeding the number of arab billionaires for the first time.

5. China has also seen a dramatic increase and now boasts 115 billionaires. When you add the chinese billionaires from Hong Kong (36), Taiwan (25), the ASEAN nations and the West the total of chinese billionaires jumps to around 210.

6. India has 55 billionaires including 2 in the top ten. Including overseas indians the total comes to 62 indian billionaires.

7. Brazil is growing billionaires at a rapid clip and now at 30 has more of them than Japan (26).

8. Russia has 101 billionaires making it one of the only 3 nations with more than a 100 billionaires. Moscow is the billionaire capital of the world with 79 of them living in that city.

9. 1210 billionaires hold some $ 4.5 Trillion in wealth

Three ethnicities can now boast of more than 200 billionaires each: the brits, the chinese and the jews. Together they account for more than half of the world's billionaires. No other ethnicity reaches even the 100 mark.

India's place, position and performance in the world stage is something we Indians speculate in regard to with both anxiety and excitement. However, I'm happy to say that such indexes, such as the Forbes Billionaires list are surprisingly more motivational and inspiring than they are subject to criticism. One would think that there would be resentment and criticism for such listings, as it is partially a reflection of the disparity that is exists in Indian society, but the aam aadmi (Hindi for common man), especially the people of the middle class ("consumption class") only further derive fuel for the fire in the belly from such achievements by Indians here, and abroad. It's a shared excitement of sorts, an excitement that I feel from time to time as well. It is inspiring to see such innovative and industrious Indians being recognized for their talent and ability.

Good post and observations in the opening post, by the way.

You can have 100 billionairs in a country of 200 people and 100 in a country of billion people, thats only what matters and sayis anything.

Like Monaco and India

# of billionaires just shows how wealth isn't well-distributed amongst the citizens of that nation... it's an indicator of marginalization.
