I find this hard to believe for any place in Spain:

"Another theory suggests that Catalunya (Latin Gathia Launia) derives from the name Gothia (or Gauthia), "Land of the Goths"

The origin of the name of Catalonia is unknown. One thing's for sure: Catalunya (Catalonia) comes from catal* (Catalan), not the other way round.

I once impressed a Cuban chick by repeating this name after her in a first try. Spanish sounds are very easy to pick up if your first language is Russian.

Cool city names - Dannemora, Bethesda, Archangelsk.

Interesting. Most people I know from there don't have any problem being with the rest of Spain. I only knew about this recently issue between some just recently by a few....

Samarkanda. Somewhere in the middle east, beautiful name to me.

Matamoros. (moor killer) A ordinary surname and/or place name in Spain, for historical obvious reasons.
