In Europe there is quite a bit of anti-English sentiment, in particular from the Southern European nations like France, Spain and Italy, but to be honest I've ever sensed hostility towards the English from Swedish and Dutch. In Spain the anti-English sentiment is quite institutionalised with local governments quite frequently knocking down homes legally purchased by English people.
Also, it's quite common for an Irish or Scottish person to walk into a bar in Spain, Italy, Turkey, etc, and get treated with disregarded and disrespect initially, and then when they find out where he's from, their whole attitude suddenly changes and they proclaim things like "Oh you're alright, we just don't like the English". I can understand why the Spaniards would hate us though. We fucked up their Armada, we stole the Southern tip of their country, now we've pushed North into the Costa del Sol and stolen their towns, we smashed up their Argie mates in South America and to add insult to injury we are now taking their beaches and taking their women. We've bullied those little Spaniards something awful. |

I think your football hooligans in Euros and World Cups give you a very bad image. Maybe that could be one of the reasons? ---------- Post added 2010-09-03 at 11:33 ---------- Insulting English people seem to be the last bastion of acceptable racism. |

Strangely enough Europeans tend to insult us by calling us conservative. Regardless, I think the hatred of English people goes beyond their uptight contempt for English people having a good time. It's certainly fuel to the fire, but it's not the main reason. Obviously this does not fit to all English but unfortunately it does for quite a big chunk. Especially on European tourist destinations. Further you go from Europe, the quality of English tourists increases. |

The blonder you are the harder you have to try, and that's a fact. 3. I don't dislike English. Contrary to the common belief, I think their women are rather pretty (if slim). ![]() ---------- Post added 2010-09-03 at 12:51 ---------- Loud, drunk, cheap |

The English are annoyingly smug when things are going their way (witness the World Cup fiasco) but cringe when they arent..like Germans, only lazier. English girls are prettier when slim..when. |

Yeat that's why we smashed them up in WW2 when those French ponces bent over a took it up the arse and those Spanish and Italian pusses sucked Hitter's knob. Both World Wars in Europe would have finished in stalemate without the Yanks. ![]() |

I meant lazy in peacetime (even George Orwell wrote the English were the laziest people in Europe). |

George Orwell was a socialist pansy who wished he was Catalan. Regardless, I find it hard to believe we're lazier than the Spanish, the country that needs to have a sleep at mid-day to rest their tired little bodies. Apart from fighting, they are only good at speculating and stealing. ![]() |

Of course, because Spain didn't have a huge empire. Then again, I guess they didn't get rich from it, the UK keeps Spain afloat through EU grants, lol. 20% unemployment. The Spanish Empire was earlier and very large until the early 19th century. The British finished up bigger but thanks to the Scots and Irish. Even in North America the English were usually huddled on the east coast while the Scots-Irish pushed the frontier westwards. |
