Some Filipino stereotypes:

Filipinos are nurses. --Er, I'm not a nurse.

Filipinos are nannys. --I'm not a nanny.

Filipinos are good at math. --NEVER.

Filipinos can dance and sing. --I can dance, singing not so much.

Filipinos are Catholic.

Filipinos are health care aides. --I'm a doctor. Does that count?

Filipinos women are flat chested. --Uhmmmm...not reeeally

Filipinos are ghetto. --I guess I'm a little bit.

Filipinos are mail-order brides.

Well, that's just culturally insensitive.

There's more to being a paisanu than cosa nostra and living with your mother forever. At least, I'd like to think so.

[And yes, we got the word from the Spanish period.]

Stereotypes that fit:

Roman Catholic
Traditional
Very, very, very family oriented
More affinity towards your region than your country (Both in Italy and the US)
Mama's boy
Knows where the good restaurants are, has a profound love of food (esp. Italian food)
Knows somebody who knows somebody
Talks with hands (edited in)

Stereotypes that don't fit:

Prone to violence
No respect for law
Hatred of gays
Ethnic pride that borders on supremacist views
Chauvinist feelings towards gender equality
Adulterous when in a relationship, on the prowl every weekend when single
Wears more jewelry than most women

I didn't know those stereotypes. Except by traditional, mama's boy and loves food.

Oh! And...Do you speak with your hands? lol

I do... but that's not exclusively "our" thing anymore. It's spread to a lot of New Yorkers who aren't Italian. The wonderful thing about our city is that we share aspects of our cultures. People have noted that I know more about Judaism and their culture than most Jews.

Needless to say, I have a hard time keeping my hands at my sides when I talk, especially about something I'm passionate about.

Most Mexican talk with their hands too, at least I do a lot. I think that's a general Latin thing.

They say people from Alentejo (southern Portugal) are lazy. I fit that one nicely.
I like fish... i can't think of anything else. I don't know what stereotypes we have.
