Rich whites are escaping South Africa and moving theirs capitals elsewhere. I don't think this economic "prosperity" will last long in a sea of poverty, crime and HIV. Besides, half of the poors of Africa want to move to South Africa!

An excellent photo study, but the contents aren't that surprising for South Africans. There have always been poor whites in the country, mainly Afrikaaners, and if you look back at the rise of the National Party and apartheid in 1948, you will see that fear of poverty was a major driving force within Afrikaaner politics.

The National Party itself was social democratic, using public money to improve the baseline standard of living for whites, and state-owned utilities were long seen as secured jobs for whites. During apartheid, many of the people you see in these photos would have been state employees - they wouldn't have been rich, always remaining at the bottom of the white social ladder, but they would have enjoyed "first-in-line" privileges over the poor from other races.

When apartheid ended, that privilege also ended, and today poor whites are at a double disadvantage - they inherited their parents lower social standards (poor education, dysfunctional families etc), but they are also particularly sensitive to pro-black affirmative action, as they used to rely on pro-white affirmative action during apartheid.

I'm mixed race myself, from Cape Town, and I bear no ill will to the people in this story. I once had a wonderful relationship with an Afrikaans woman who was not very far removed from the people in this study. But things have to be seen in historical perspective. Don't forget that South Africa was never a very rich country: it derived most its money from mining taxes and support industry, which is no long-term basis for prosperity. Coloured, which may as well be the same thing. They had the right to vote towards the end of Apartheid, they're the victims of racial bias from blacks, and they speak Afrikaans.

I have some sympathy for the whites of South Africa, but it's hard to feel terrible for them when this is just the shoe being on the other foot. They mistreated blacks for many, many years and now blacks are mistreating them.

Many already have. Whites make a disproportionate number of emigrants from SA. However, their families have lived there for hundreds of years. It's tough to leave the only country you've ever called home. Plus, in the Netherlands, they don't speak the same language. Afrikaans is close to Dutch, but there's still significant difference between the two.

B) Many Palestinians have only been in Israel since the 1920s, as there was a huge amount of illegal Arab immigration to Palestine from 1922-1931.

I'm saying that it would be difficult for Afrikaners to emigrate. I'm not saying that they shouldn't. Moreover, if you look at my former post on the subject, you'll see that while I'm somewhat sympathetic, I don't take a hard-line view one way or the other. They're getting their just desserts, in a way... but I don't think the sins of the father should be placed onto the son, or that two wrongs make a right. Oppression begets oppression, sadly.
